Authors’ Note: Three romanization systems are commonly used for the Korean Hangul script: Revised Romanization of Korean (officially adopted by the government since 2000), McCune-Reischauer (most commonly used until 2000), and Yale Romanization (mainly used in linguistics). As a result, many inconsistencies prevail. For example, the period name Joseon frequently referred to in this book is also spelt Choson, Chosun, and Joson. We have employed the Revised Romanization of Korean for the texts except in personal names, out of respect for the individuals, and for words that are already familiar in the English language in the old spelling, such as kimchi and ginseng.
