In a very specific sense, this book and the oral histories which are its spine have become a time capsule, circa 1971–1972. Now, more than thirty five years later, rather than deal with the question of tenses, i.e. “he said” rather than “he says” in the myriad quotations from those who have since left us, I have made a conscious decision to retain the original form.
