Learning Standards and Learning Targets: What's the Difference?

Оглавление

Given the plethora of terms embedded in education-related debates, declarations, policies, and statements, it's understandable that many people are confused by some elements of the vocabulary. A case in point is learning standards versus learning targets. Moss and Brookhart (2012) make the following distinctions:

Learning standards

Are written from the teacher's point of view.

Serve to unify outcomes across a series of lessons or a unit.

 Are typically broad in nature.

Learning targets

Are written from the learner's point of view.

Consist of lesson-sized chunks of information.

 Are specific in nature.

To increase our understanding, let's take a closer look at standards and targets.
