Learning targets are by no means a universal component of classroom education, and when they are present, they can be problematic. The "traditional" approach to learning targets—if there is any approach at all—typically has three flaws. Too often, learning targets are (1) teacher-centered; (2) simply copied from the state, provincial, or national standards; or (3) on display but with no apparent plan for relevant learning activity.
