Verses 12-17
“Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because that Edom hath dealt against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and hath greatly offended, and revenged himself upon them; therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; I will also stretch out Mine hand upon Edom, and will cut of man and beast from it; and I will make it desolate from Teman; and they of Dedan shall fall by the sword. And I will lay My vengeance upon Edom by the hand of My people Israel: and they shall do in Edom according to Mine anger and according to My fury; and they shall know My vengeance, saith the Lord GOD. Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because the Philistines have dealt by revenge, and have taken vengeance with a despiteful heart, to destroy it for the old hatred; therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will stretch out Mine hand upon the Philistines, and I will cut off the Cherethims, and destroy the remnant of the sea coast. And I will execute great vengeance upon them with furious rebukes; and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall lay My vengeance upon them.”
The Lord was displeased with the actions of the Edomites who were descendants of Esau, Jacob’s brother. These cousins of Israel refused to offer assistance to their kindred and instead, they sided with Israel’s enemies. The prophet Amos wrote: “Thus saith the LORD; for three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he did pursue his brother with a sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath forever: but I will send a fire upon Teman, which shall devour the palaces of Bozrah” (1:11-12).
Edom’s geographical location formed a natural fortress, but this would not impede the punishment of the LORD. His retribution would be swift and thorough, and it would come from Israel, the people they least feared. Isaiah 11:10-14 states: “Then it will happen on that day that the Lord will again recover the second time with His hand the remnant of His people, who will remain from Assyria, Egypt, Pathros, Cush, Elam, Shinar, Hamath, and from the islands of the sea. And He will lift up a standard for the nations and assemble the banished ones of Israel, and will
