is thy going out, and, Issachar in thy tents.” “Going out,” is another word for sea-fearing. Both Jacob and Moses blessed Zebulun and gave him Tyrus but something happened because Asher inherited it instead. What occurred that caused Zebulun to forfeit his blessing? Let’s go to Joshua 18:1-3: “Now the whole congregation of the children of Israel assembled together at Shiloh, and set up the tabernacle of meeting there. And the land was subdued before them. But there remained among the children of Israel seven tribes which had not yet received their inheritance. Then Joshua said unto the children of Israel. “How long will you neglect to go and possess the land which the LORD GOD of your fathers has given you?” (See also Joshua 19:10-51).
By these words of Joshua it showed that the land given to the sons of Jacob were not all taken. The LORD now steps in and re-distributes the land Himself. Joshua 18:6-10; 19:10-16, 24-31 shows the land redistribution for Zebulun and Asher, with Asher and his descendants being allocated the fortified city of Tyrus, which was previously given to his brother Zebulun (Joshua 19:29). Leah was ecstatic at the birth of Zebulun because he was a gift to her from GOD as his name implies (Genesis 30:19-20). There is however a deeper meaning as it relates to this special child. Leah did all she could to be first in her husband’s heart but that place was reserved for her younger sister Rachel. The LORD knew this and Zebulun was a dowry from Him to Leah, indicating that although she was not her husband’s first love, she was in fact first place in the eyes of the LORD, so He justly gave this child to her as a dowry; the gift brought by the bride to her husband at the time of marriage, and Zebulun was that gift.
The LORD makes no mistake, He is intimately aware of everything both good and evil. Zebulun forfeited his gift and at the death of his father and later Moses, this gift was transferred to his brother Asher, the surrogate son of Leah by her handmaid Zilpah. The name Asher is interpreted “happy” (Genesis 30:12-13) and that which Zebulun failed to possess as a free gift, made someone else very happy. The wealthy Phoenician trading at port of Tyrus now belonged to Asher, but he, too, failed to completely rid the land of heathen settlers (Judges Chapter 1). The LORD knows the devastating effect of co-mingling with the ungodly, and for this reason, He would always warn His people to completely cleanse the land prior to its occupation. Throughout Scripture the ill-effect of not thoroughly removing every trace of the previous inhabitants from a region as ordered by the LORD, have caused
