Israel to be repeatedly influenced by their idolatrous cultural practices.

Verses 19-21

“For thus saith the Lord GOD; When I shall make thee a desolate city, like the cities that are not inhabited; when I shall bring up the deep upon thee, and great waters shall cover thee; when I shall bring thee down with them that descend into the pit, with the people of old time, and shall set thee in the lower parts of the earth, in places desolate of old, with them that go down to the pit, that thou be not inhabited; and I shall set glory in the land of the living; I will make thee a terror, and thou shalt be no more: though thou be sought for, yet shalt thou never be found again, saith the Lord GOD.”

The Babylonian incursion on Tyrus was devastating, yet this great and affluent city-state whose geographical location was its strength and security, would be brought low once again and this time they would be dealt a final, crushing defeat. The LORD said He would bring up the deep and great waters upon Tyre, metaphorically speaking of allowing another nation to complete their final and crushing blow to their already war-wearied state. Alexander III popularly known as Alexander the Great, 356-323 B.C., founder of Alexandria and King of Macedon conquered Tyrus. Flavius Josephus, a Romano-Jewish historian confirmed that it was Alexander the Great who accomplished this feat (“Josephus” The Complete Works p. 11.8.4). As Tyrus became rejected, debased and discarded, so also was the memories of this once glorious city state.
