Fatima

Director of Women’s Affairs, Bamyan

We established a Women's Development Network and in 2009, we made a shelter for women who have problems with their families. We worked with 40 organizations in the Bamyan area to help women in various ways.

I met Fatima, her husband, and two lovely daughters over dinner at Belgheis’ and Ali’s home where I was staying, in the outskirts of Bamyan City. Quiet but not shy, energetic but calm, Fatima talked passionately about the work she’s done to help women.

Fatima was born in the Bamyan area, but fled to Iran as a child to escape the violence. In Iran, she completed her education and teacher training. She worked in educational Non-governmental organizations (NGO)s and taught in a girl’s school. She and her husband were among the first to return to Bamyan once the Taliban were overthrown. In 2002, the governor invited her to become the Director of Women’s Affairs. She ran for Parliament in 2010 but lost.
