Chapter Five

Shopping and the Store Cupboard

You will find that a special diet needs special shopping, and unless you plan sensibly this could mean extra hours of trekking round the shops without much success. Your best friend in this project could turn out to be the telephone as this will save a tremendous amount of time and energy. Items which you cannot obtain easily may have to be bought by mail order. However you obtain these special foods, it is common sense to build up a stock of them in your store cupboard.

Although friends may at first offer assistance with your special shopping, they usually become less anxious to help as it starts to become a weekly burden. Usually small shops are more helpful than large stores and will order in say a dozen bottles of a particular kind of soy sauce for you providing you will buy all 12 at once. Although a more expensive way of shopping is to order items by mail it is relatively effortless and they can be delivered right to your door. Usually the more you buy the cheaper it works out, and some firms offer free delivery over a certain amount.
