A Nice Bottle of Blue Nun

Оглавление

Blue Nun was the first table wine actively and aggressively aimed at the mass market. In 1984, 1.25 million cases were sold in the USA alone, with hundreds of thousands of bottles bought in the UK. Although now seen as a bit of a joke, a 70s throwback and not something a serious wine connoisseur would even sniff at, it did a perfectly decent job and was extremely popular from the 50s right up to the early 90s.

The secrets to its popularity were a) it was cheap, and b) it was quite versatile and could be drunk with any sort of food. As a result, millions of families cracked open a bottle on Christmas Day.

Other festive tipples that have fallen foul of modern fashion include Harvey’s Bristol Cream, Pomagne (a light, fizzy cider marketed as an alternative to champagne) and Black Tower wine, all of which are still available if you want to re-enact the Christmases of your youth, this time taking the role of your parents.
