They had never been anywhere near actual cheese and didn’t really look anything like a football but they were nevertheless called cheese footballs, and even though that isn’t a particularly festive concept, they were often thrown in the Christmas shopping trolley by eager kids shouting ‘Please mum, please, it’s Christmas!’ to be eaten by the handful during the holidays.

Still around but perhaps not quite the staple they were some years ago.
