Chapter 1 presents a new approach to thinking spatially about research questions and methods. Why think spatially? We address this question by illustrating the versatility and wide-ranging applicability of GIS. This chapter sets the stage for using GIS with a brief, contextualized review (with examples) of GIS and geospatial techniques as a component of research. It explores the added value spatially based research methods bring to enhanced scientific investigation. We address how GIS research methods fit into an overall research framework to provide a more complete picture of the topic under study. The chapter serves as a foundation for later sections of the text.
