Workspace

If your parents have a workshop in the garage or

basement, that is a fantastic spot to build a derby

car. If not, the kitchen or picnic table is just as

good. If you’re not working in a designated shop

area, just make sure to cover your work surface

with newspaper. When it comes time to do test

runs, the spare leaf in the dining room table makes

a great test track.

Ear Protection

Ear protection is necessary whenever you

run power equipment. Ear protection is

available at home centers in the lawn care

or the safety section.

Power Tool Workshop Day

Most Boy Scout packs have a power

tool day in the weeks before the Derby

race. It is a great idea to take

advantage of this if you are

interested in learning how

to use cool tools

-

like band

saws, scroll saws, power

drills, and power sanders

-

with the help of someone

experienced.

This way, you can also

avoid needing to purchase

power tools if you don’t

have much other use for

them. Plus, it’s always fun

to work on your car with

other kids; you never know

who will have a great idea

to volunteer.
