Dear Adventurers,

I’d like you to meet Dash Derby. He will be your tour

guide through the process of building a derby car.

His character is part me, and part all the kids I’ve

worked with making hundreds of derby cars over the

past ten years. The part of him that comes from me

likes red, and especially likes cool cars! Follow along

with Dash and you’ll be able to make an awesome

derby car, too!

About the Author

Creative Director, woodworker, and Assistant

Scoutmaster Troy Thorne has helped to build hundreds of

derby cars. He participates in Scouting activities with his

son, Nathan, who was a national finalist in the All-Star

Derby Design Contest. Nate has grown out of Cub Scouts

and is on his way to Eagle, but luckily Troy’s daughter,

Kelsey, is racing Awana cars. Troy’s latest project is a

street-legal AC Cobra replica.
