Merrimack’s small class sizes and low student to faculty ratio of twelve to one, along with an energetic and inspiring faculty, provide the perfect recipe for active learning. Faculty members at Merrimack are engaged in wide-ranging studies, from chemistry to communications, and students often participate in this research to fulfill course credits, complete internships, or earn money as research assistants on government-funded studies.
Opportunities for undergraduate research are plentiful at Merrimack College. Merrimack’s alumni go into the workforce at such places as the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Harvard School of Public Health, and impress others with the caliber of the research experience they have achieved as undergraduates.

Students say Merrimack is a transforming place that helps students find their niches and make their own destinies. Filled with engaging and enthusiastic people, the Merrimack community is active and involved. Students transform themselves through a variety of active learning experiences in the classroom, on the athletic fields, and in countless extracurricular activities.
Merrimack’s two thousand students are from twenty-two states and twenty countries. On average, 80 percent of students live on campus. Their closeness with one another and with faculty and staff spills over into the welcoming atmosphere of the college.
In addition to more traditional housing, several housing options are of interest to an increasing number of parents and students. Merrimack’s wellness housing offers students the option of living on floors that are voluntarily free of any alcohol or drug use, an increasingly popular option. The college’s Austin Scholars community offers students a living and learning program for students with intellectual curiosity and a commitment to continue the level of involvement they had in high school activities.
Merrimack College offers twenty-two varsity sports. Twenty-one of the sports compete at the NCAA Division II level in the Northeast-10 Conference, while men’s hockey competes in the Division I Hockey East Association, placing 2nd in the Hockey East Championship and earning a spot in the NCAA Tournament, ranking #7 in the country.
Students have numerous opportunities to be involved in competitive sports, fitness activities, and recreation through Merrimack’s more than two dozen intramural and club sports like basketball, darts, dodgeball, hockey, swimming, indoor and outdoor soccer, softball, ultimate football, and volleyball, to name a few.
Only five minutes from the commuter rail and a twenty-five minute drive to Boston, Merrimack offers fast connections to city activities, nightlife, shopping, culture, and events—not to mention the metro area’s large college-age population. Whether students want to hone their career skills, see a Broadway show, or soak up some colonial history among the skyscrapers, Merrimack students think of Boston as their biggest classroom.

Make your own destiny
Merrimack’s office of career services offers one of the longest-running cooperative education programs in the Northeast, which includes a four-year and a five-year program for all majors.
Career development services at Merrimack connect students with hundreds of flexible cooperative education positions each year as well as with paid internships in every discipline. Career development staff host career fairs, information panels, recruitment days, seminars on job-interview techniques and resume writing, and career-exploration workshops. Employer recruitment on campus and alumni networking are also available through career development services. Further, Merrimack’s career services extranet allows students to post their resumes for review by major companies and arrange interviews and meetings—all online.
On average, 91 percent of Merrimack students go on to full-time employment within six months of graduation, and 7 percent of Merrimack students enter a graduate school program immediately after graduation. Students have gone on to graduate study at some of the most prestigious institutions in the world, including MIT, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Georgetown, the London School of Economics, and more.

What’s New on Campus? Center for Biotechnology and Biomedical Sciences – a suite of three new labs with state-of-the-art equipment now trains students as the next workforce in biotechnology and biomedical sciences. The Center provides cutting-edge laboratory training for students enrolled in the School of Science and Engineering.
Welcome Center- A new front door through which prospective students and their families can learn about the power of the Merrimack experience.
Merrimack Club- A new establishment where alumni, students, and faculty can gather together as one community. The “restaurant style” atmosphere will serve as a great spot for faculty to bring a guest, staff to gather for lunch or alumni to re-connect before a sports game.
McQuade Library Renovations- Renovations are being made to the McQuade Library so that the academic heart and soul of Merrimack can thrive in a technology-rich, student-oriented space. Upgrades include the installation of an oversized gas fireplace, a café, new computers, printers, and peripherals, and replacement of windows and doors for improved efficiency.
ADMISSIONS AND FINANCIAL AID
The Admission Committee places primary emphasis on the secondary school record (courses completed, grades earned and class rank), and teacher or guidance counselor recommendations. Submission of SAT and ACT scores are optional, but are considered as a part of the admission review if provided. Applicants must have earned the following high school units: 4 years of college preparatory English, 3 years of mathematics (including algebra II), 2 years of science, 2 years of social studies, 2 years of a foreign language, and 5 electives. Applicants for the SCIENCES or ENGINEERING programs, however, are expected to have at least 4 years of mathematics, and 3 years of science, including physics for engineering, but need have only 3 electives.
Merrimack College offers Early Action admission to properly qualified applicants. Merrimack also gives credit and advanced placement for Advanced Placement examinations for scores of 3 or better and for scores of 4 and above on IB examinations taken at the Higher Level.
Admission Application Deadline The freshman application deadline for the early action program is November 15. The freshman application deadline for regular admission is February 1.
Financial Aid In 2010-2011, 92% of students received financial aid with the average aid package being $18,857. 88% of students received institutional aid.for a total of $21 million in institutional aid awarded for academic, athletics and need based aid. The average institutional aid package was $13,898.
Merrimack College awards merit scholarships to incoming freshmen. These scholarships are based on recalculated HSGPA. Awards range from $2,000 to full tuition. All students receiving institutional scholarships, whether based on merit or need, must maintain the required cumulative grade point average as well as adhering to the necessary filing requirements for renewal consideration of aid.
Listed below are some of the merit scholarships awarded to qualified incoming freshmen:
Austin Scholars - full tuition scholarships available to students graduating first in their class. A cumulative grade point average of 3.4 is required to maintain this four-year scholarship.
Presidential Scholars - $16,000 scholarships are available based on academic excellence, personal accomplishments and future potential. These scholarships are guaranteed for four years provided the student maintains a 3.2 cumulative grade point average.
Trustee Scholars - receive scholarships of $12,000. They are guaranteed for four years provided the recipient maintains the required cumulative grade point average of 2.8.
Blue-Gold Scholars - receive scholarships of $7,500. They are guaranteed for four years provided the recipient maintains the required cumulative grade point average of 2.5.
Institutional Scholarships-Returning Students - Returning students, who have received academic scholarships, need based grants, or other institutional funds are required to maintain the necessary cumulative grade point average for their award and file the required applications. These funds are based on academic excellence, financial need, or specified criterion as established by the college or donor.
Endowed/Restricted Scholarships - Both incoming and returning students may be eligible for funds donated by more than 200 individuals and corporations based on the criteria established by the college or donor. Many of these scholarships are renewable based on financial need, required cumulative grade point average, and filing requirements.
Friends of Merrimack Scholarships - Merrimack College is grateful for the Friends of Merrimack who have so generously donated their support on behalf of our students. Each year juniors or seniors make application for the Friends of Merrimack Scholarships. Based on financial need, cumulative grade point average, and a written letter from the student, nearly 100 scholarships were awarded on 2009-2010 through various Friends of Merrimack Scholarship funds.
