4 DISTINCTIONS

ENGAGED STUDENTS

Lesley University’s commitment to experiential learning is unsurpassed. From internships to innovative one- and two-week travel study programs, to unique ecological programs that give students the opportunity to spend 4 semesters in different global environments, each Lesley student completes 450 – 650 hours of field study and learning…

Engaged Students

Lesley places an equal emphasis on citizenship and scholarship. Lesley students have as deep a commitment to community service as they do to learning. Accordingly, the university provides plenty of opportunities for linking academic challenges and experiences in the classroom with those gained in the world at large.

At Lesley, there is a strong belief that learning should take place in many places, not just in classrooms. Students have the opportunity to participate in a number of Lesley-affiliated programs off campus in the U.S. and abroad. Lesley offers a number of summer travel-study courses that are generally ten days to three weeks in length. Planned study tours are led by distinguished members of the faculty and offer students the chance to discover the history, culture, and art of various regions. Through study tours, students also gain an in-depth understanding of significant world events, including tours of the Cuban experience in education and the arts, and tours focused on the British experience, learning from the Holocaust, the traditions and cultures of the Southwest, as well as the exploration of the Amazon and the rain forest in Peru and Ecuador.

For students who are passionate about the environment, the Audubon Expedition Institute (AEI) at Lesley offers students a dynamic educational experience. The earth and all its diverse terrain serves as the classroom, and lessons are taught in states like Hawaii and Alaska, as well as countries such as Mexico and Canada. AEI is unlike any other college experience; students spend a semester traveling in independent learning communities with two to four faculty and fifteen to twenty students.

GREAT TEACHING

Not lectures - discussions. That’s the predominant model for classroom learning which is made easier by Lesley’s small class sizes. As a result, deep discussions and close interactions are common, with classroom discussions frequently tied back to each student’s out-of-classroom learning experiences…

Great Teaching

The teaching emphasis at Lesley is on exposing students to the real world through experiential learning opportunities. Internships are the hallmark of a Lesley education and are carefully interwoven into every program. Combined with small seminars, students embark on hands-on field experiences beginning their very first year. Through classroom discussions, students will find themselves challenging prior assumptions and using their experiences from internships to examine theory.

Classroom learning at Lesley is a collaborative effort between students and faculty. The focus is on discussions instead of lectures, and discussions are often spirited and critical, encouraging no-holds-barred thinking. Classes are small, and students are completely immersed in the learning process. The faculty, who are dedicated and accomplished, are not only experts in their fields but are practitioners, as well. Furthermore, they are committed to providing the personalized attention required to satisfy inquisitive minds.

Art has long been used to depict, critique, and influence society. Those students who wish to expand their art horizons benefit from the classes available at the Art Institute of Boston (AIB). One of four colleges within Lesley University, AIB provides one of the finest professional art educations available, in a supportive and highly creative atmosphere where bold ideas are welcome.

VIBRANT COMMUNITIES

Lesley students never miss an opportunity to get involved – politically, socially or culturally, which makes the school’s Boston/Cambridge location ideal. Opportunities for making new friends in “America’s college town” are ample too; Lesley students are among the nearly 230,000 who study in Boston annually…

Vibrant Community

While Cambridge is a cosmopolitan and dynamic city, the main campus at Lesley is located among quiet side streets. Residence halls and college-owned Victorian houses stand alongside stately trees within the campus courtyard.

Across Lesley University, there is an environment that empowers students to learn and grow, making connections with friends, peers, faculty, and staff. The office of student activities sponsors programs and events throughout the year. Clubs and organizations run the gamut from fun to serious. The dodgeball club, Amnesty International, the Oxford Street Players, and Students for a Free Tibet are just a few examples. Students will also find a series of lectures on a variety of intriguing subjects, choir concerts, Sunday night movies, and Shakespearean theatre.

Athletics add significantly to the atmosphere at Lesley. NCAA Division III teams compete in basketball, crew, soccer, softball, and volleyball. In addition, students can participate in intramural sports such as cross-country, tennis, and swimming. Those students who simply want to stay fit can choose from activities such as aerobics and yoga. All in all, there’s something for everyone, whether students want to put on their sweats and participate, or just watch the action.

Few cities in America offer college students more to do than Boston. The Boston and Cambridge area is home to more than two hundred and thirty thousand students, so making all types of friends is a certainty. With everything from the Red Sox to the Museum of Fine Arts to dancing at one of the many clubs on Lansdowne Street, the city offers an abundance of sports, cultural, and entertainment options. Boston transportation is safe and easy to use, making it convenient for students to get where they need to go.
