Unity College is a leader in the environmental movement, focused on sustainability in the classroom and in the real world. Our friendly campus community is full of active learners—both students and teachers—who collaborate in creating adventures that help you grow personally and professionally.

ENGAGED STUDENTS

Students at Unity are given the opportunity to engage through a variety of exciting experiences including a week-long wilderness experience through the Nova Program, numerous internship and study abroad opportunities around the world, and several professional certificate programs…

Take Root and Grow

 All students begin their Unity experience by participating in the Nova Program. Nova trips are week-long wilderness experiences that include community-building, small group discussions and service projects. They are designed to support the transition to college life at Unity by emphasizing personal growth, building social connections, and promoting environmental stewardship.

 All students are required to participate in an internship, seminar or thesis as a graduation requirement. We currently offer internship opportunities in 50 states and 23 countries. Unity also offers semester internships in Washington D.C. through a partnership with the Washington Center.

 In addition, students have the opportunity to earn several professional certifications including Wilderness First Responder (WFR), Open Water SCUBA through the Professional Association of Diving Instructors, Forest Protection Officer with the U.S. Forest Service, Interpretive Guide through the National Association for Interpretive Standards, and Teacher Certification for science, grades 7-12.

 Unity also has an articulation agreement with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) to enable students to participate in their semester programs.

At Unity, you’re taught by and collaborate with an environmentally focused faculty and staff at the leading edge of research and professional practice. You can investigate ecology with a Fulbright Scholar, practice conservation law enforcement with a former chief warden, or argue sustainability issues with the authors of the national debate…

Expand Your Mind

 At Unity, you will always be taught by a leading academic; never a separate instructor or teacher’s assistant. That means more interaction and the opportunity to really get to know you professors. 61% of our full-time faculty hold terminal degrees and 80% of courses are twenty students or less.

 In the spring semester humanities and science faculty have collaborated to create a learning community, linking courses that participate in a travel component. Students in the Tropical Marine Ecology learning community complete a senior capstone trip to Costa Rica, helping to identify unknown species. Other travel experiences have included a recent trip to Nicaragua studying culture, ecology and environment, as well as a trip to the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales to learn more about renewable energy.

 In the spring of 2008, 47% of seniors reported they had worked on a research project with a faculty member outside of a regular class and 68% had a culminating senior year experience (from the National Survey of Student Engagement).

Community at Unity College is very diverse, with a wide range of activities available to students. From athletics and clubs such as ultimate Frisbee and archery, to the Performing Arts Centre located in the heart of town, there really is something for everyone…

Get Outdoors, Get Real

 The Unity College campus, 225 acres of fields and woodlands overlooking Lake Winnecook and the village of Unity, reflects the diversity of our student community. On our main campus you can find a hoop house and organic garden that supply food to dining services, a student-run recycling program and an Adirondack shelter used as an outdoor classroom. In addition, you can play soccer, run the loop, relax at the Field of Dreams, or take in a show at the Performing Arts Centre.

 Over 75% of the student body participates in more than 40 different athletics, clubs, and organizations. The two fastest growing clubs are ultimate frisbee and archery. For those that like to go on their own outdoor adventures, the Outdoor Activities Center, offers free equipment rental for camping, hiking, canoeing and cross-country skiing (just to name a few)!

 Our campus community offers six residence halls and three cottages with comfortable double and single rooms. The inclusive residential communities celebrate diversity and strong community involvement. Campus residents can participate in the Dean’s Cup, a program recently recognized by the Maine Association of Student Affairs Practitioners as their Program of the Year.

Live Your Passion

 Unity has a Career Resource Center focused on assisting students with internship and job searches. The Center also offers multiple events including grad school nights, resume writing workshops, and networking opportunities. The largest environmental career fair in New England is held at Unity each year, with more than 70 businesses and organizations in attendance.

 Some students choose to continue their education in graduate or law degree programs. While many students take advantage of Unity College’s 4+1 partnership with Husson College others attend institutions such as Arizona State University, New York University, Texas A&M, University of Rhode Island, Antioch New England and University of Maine School of Law.

Seven clubs sports: archery, baseball, ice hockey, indoor soccer, lacrosse, ultimate frisbee, and woodsmen.

 Unity College was named to Washington Monthly’s Top 50 Baccalaureate Colleges, coming in at number 16.

 Unity House, a LEED platinum residence, was completed in the summer of 2008 and designed for a net-zero lifestyle. The house has solar panels on its roof and significantly more insulation than traditional homes. Design was done in partnership with the Open Prototype Initiative, an architecture-research group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

 Unity was one of the first signers of the American College and University President’s Climate Commitment, pledging to go Carbon-Neutral as soon as we can.

 Unity received a score of 98 (out of 99) on the Princeton Review’s green score for colleges and was also given honorable mention by the Sierra Club as a “college that gets it”.

 Unity was named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or University can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.

ADMISSIONS AND FINANCIAL AID

Admissions and Financial Aid

Unity offers both paper and on-line applications for first-year, transfer, home-school and international applicants.

Steps to Apply include: 1. A complete application, including an essay 2. Official transcripts 3. 2 letters of recommendation

Test scores such as SAT and ACT are optional

An on-campus interview is recommended, but not required

International students, for whom English is not a native language, are required to submit results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (T.O.E.F.L.).

Admissions Application Deadline First Year Students: Early Action – December 15th; Regular Admissions – February 15th Transfer Students: April 15th

Financial Aid For 2010-2011 the total cost of attendance for residential students is $29,710. Tuition and fees are $21,640 and Room and Board is $8,070. 90% of students receive financial assistance, with an average award of $12,500.

Academic scholarship eligibility is based upon a student’s high school or college cumulative GPA, based on a 4.0 scale (combined with the SAT/ACT for those who submit) and offered at the time of admission. A full list of scholarships is available on the Unity College website.

Unity also offers a financial aid estimator service. Students and their families can use their most recent tax information to determine an estimate of aid eligibility. The form is available on-line and results are returned in approximately two weeks.
