4 DISTINCTIONS
ENGAGED STUDENTS
The world of knowledge spans beyond the classroom. That’s why UMF students enjoy the myriad of events that take students out of the classroom while challenging their intellect…
A Broader Perspective
Farmington offers a number of opportunities to help students connect their classroom studies to what could be their future work. Many of UMF’s students find that some of their most valuable learning experiences happen outside the classroom. These include internships, student teaching, class projects, and service learning. Last year, about 70 percent of all UMF students participated in a variety of practical, hands-on learning opportunities—from Maine-based science internships at Jackson Laboratories in Bar Harbor and Portland’s Maine Medical Center, to geography internships and research projects in Lanai, Hawaii.
UMF intentionally limits its enrollment to two thousand students to provide the ideal size for a quality, student-centered academic experience. Whether involved with class work, internships, or community service, each day and every hour at UMF is constructed to be a part of a student’s education. Students who are engaged with the campus and the surrounding community seven days a week are often the most successful throughout their college careers. UMF students are civic-minded, are an active part of the community, and help to make the Farmington area an even better place to live. Students volunteer as youth soccer coaches, help fill the local food pantries, organize blood drives, and distribute winter hats and mittens to area children. They are concerned about the environment and interested in the concept of sustainability. UMF students’ strong drive to make a difference also expands globally and beyond graduation.
Farmington students are active and involved, participating in over sixty clubs and organizations. Opportunities for creative expression through music, dance, writing, art, and theater are complemented by participation in club sports, intramurals, and eleven NCAA Division III athletics.
GREAT TEACHING
UMF students have unmatched choices when it comes to majors: choose a standard course of study, combine two for an interdisciplinary major, or create your own…
Good Things, Small Packages
For the past ten years, U.S. News & World Report has consistently recognized UMF as a top public liberal arts college. The American Association for Higher Education recently cited UMF among twenty colleges and universities nationwide that best exemplify the creation of opportunities for student success.
UMF provides its students with high educational standards; strong academic programs in the arts and sciences, education, and human services; a committed, caring, and rigorous faculty; learning environments that stimulate creativity and critical thinking; and financial resources that make its excellence affordable.
Farmington offers a wide range of majors, opening the door to an almost limitless variety of careers or graduate-study opportunities. These degree programs prepare students for careers in business, education, medicine, science, government, law, industry, human services, social science, the arts, and countless other professions.
Because many students have multiple academic interests, Farmington offers a variety of interdisciplinary majors such as sociology/anthropology, music/arts, geology/geography, and environmental planning and policy. Students may also create their own program, referred to as an individualized studies major, in which they combine courses from at least two disciplines and have a faculty adviser from each discipline.
The UMF honors program is open to outstanding students who have shown exceptional motivation, creativity, and a strong interest in the world of ideas. Participants in the program take small, seminar-style interdisciplinary courses and attend a variety of specially planned lectures and field trips.
Farmington believes in the value of travel as a learning experience. Travel opportunities extend from a few days at professional conferences with faculty, to three-week courses over winter break and May terms, to a full semester at another college in the U.S. or abroad. In the past few years, students and faculty have traveled to Mount Saint Helens, Ireland, Scotland, and Newfoundland to study geology; England to shoot photography; Italy and Germany to study politics; Mexico and England to study special education; sites across Maine, Vermont, and New York to study archaeological digs; Costa Rica to study biology and engage in environmental writing; and Japan to study theater and architecture.
In addition, Farmington is a member of the National Student Exchange Program, which enables students to study for up to a year at 177 different institutions across the United States and Canada, or at any of the programs abroad offered by those schools. Students can also participate in one of UMF’s direct exchange programs in Russia, China, France, or England.

VIBRANT COMMUNITIES
Over 50 student clubs, intramural sports, and frequent campus events give students plenty of options for socializing and out-of-class learning…
Where Independence Meets Collaboration
The quality of the people who make up the University of Maine at Farmington has enabled it to build a national reputation for academic excellence. Important to the university is its ongoing commitment to civic engagement across the curriculum and its shared interest in interdisciplinary approaches to sustainability and the study of natural and social systems.
UMF’s location in the foothills of the spectacular lakes and mountains region of western Maine is itself a source of strength. UMF values both the close integration of the campus with the Farmington community and its proximity to a natural world, offering inspiring landscapes and opportunities for outdoor recreation such as skiing, snowboarding, hiking, and kayaking.
Over 50 percent of UMF students work on campus, which provides both income and opportunities to make connections with other students, faculty, and staff. Students can choose from a wide variety of jobs, including online research, campus photography, Web design, coordinating student events and activities, office work, lifeguarding, personal training, and much more.
One of the greatest experiences of attending college is living in a residence hall. At Farmington, typically 95 percent of first-year students, and over half of all students, live in on-campus housing. Farmington has recently made a significant commitment to enhancing the residential experience as evidenced by increased weekend programming, extended food-service hours, increased access to campus facilities, and the opening of a new “green” residence hall.
Farmington offers a summer experience program every June, intended to assist incoming first-year students with the transition from high school to college. The one-week academic program, for which the students receive credit, serves as an introduction to college-level work and expectations, and enables students to make connections with their classmates and the campus community.
SUCCESSFUL OUTCOMES
A UMF graduate becomes two things: a good person and a good person who does good things. From our thousands of alumni, we are proud of each of them for contributing to the world in their own way…
Serving the Community and the World
A growing number of students each year pursue graduate studies in fields such as creative writing, law, medicine, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, and optometry. Some jump right into the workforce. Other graduates are employed in nonprofit organizations, publishing houses, accounting firms, medical labs, different levels of government, and many other fields. Because of UMF’s strong tradition of teacher preparation, UMF education graduates are regarded as leaders in their respective fields and are teaching in schools from New England to Florida, Istanbul to France.
