You wouldn’t call someone you just met a “close friend” until you got to know them well. It’s no differ-
ent with your drawing tools. Get to know how your tools can serve you. The better you know them, the
more you can use them to their full potential. This is one step to improving your skills.
How to hold the pencil
The basic way to hold the pencil
Don’t grip on the pencil too firmly, and relax your hand.
Use your thumb, index finger and middle finger to hold the
pencil. This way allows you to move the pencil in broad
motions.
Move your arm and shoulder
In order to draw long lines easily, you must move
your entire arm. It is important to also move your
wrist. Just like when playing ping-pong, you move
your entire arm for a stroke.

When drawing in
smaller areas, move
just the wrist.
Holding the pencil when drawing details
When you are trying to draw with bolder lines, or adding fine details,
hold the pencil as you would to write. Adjust your grip as needed.
