Hand, eye and pencil coordination

This exercise will help you explore making different strokes. Practice

on a large sheet of paper and use a 2B pencil.

A Use the basic pencil grip (using just the side of the

point). Draw thick vertical and horizontal lines.

B Use a detail pencil grip (as you would when you

write). Draw a straight, thin line. Try vertical and

horizontal lines.

C From top to bottom, vary the

pressure to draw alternating line

weights. Repeat from left to right.

Press harder for a bold line,

and softer for a light line.

Connect the ends of

the lines.

D Use the basic pencil grip. Draw a

circle with an angled pencil.

E Use the detail pencil grip. Draw a

circle with a thin line.

These exercises will take you a long way toward building your basic drawing skills. Also try

making fast and slow strokes. It will take some practice before you can draw a good straight

line and a perfect circle. Your papers might become full of lines and circles, but practice makes

perfect! Master your hand, eye and pencil coordination.
