PLAYTIME WITH YOUR BULL TERRIER
ОглавлениеYes, Bull Terriers like to play. If you provide a ball for your dog, make certain the ball cannot be swallowed. Tennis balls can become lodged in the dog’s throat. A baseball, football or basketball will provide hours of fun. A squeak toy made from rubber or plastic can be eaten in minutes by a Bull Terrier. A hard rubber toy or nylon bone is safer. Don’t provide an old pair of shoes, unless you want all of your shoes to become toys for your Bull Terrier.
Because Bull Terriers have a very strong urge to chew, it is imperative to provide them with chew toys. Appropriate toys are strong, durable chews made from nylon. Rawhides should not be given to a Bull Terrier nor should any soft toys that could be easily ripped up, swallowed or lodged in the throat. It is also essential to keep your Bull Terrier out of the garbage can, where he might discover such things as meat, fish and poultry bones from your latest meal. Keep in mind, again, that one of the first points of investigation for a Bull Terrier is “how does this taste?” They will also ingest just about anything, such as socks, pieces of blanket, hats, various types of plastic, rubber, metal and stones. Any of these items may cause obstructions in the lower intestine. If you notice symptoms, such as depression, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea and lack of interest in food, contact your vet immediately—your Bull Terrier may have a blockage!
One of the favorite activities of a Bull Terrier is racing around the house at full speed for no apparent reason other than “just because.” They rarely collide with anything unintentionally. It is almost as if they have radar as they dodge this and dodge that with great agility. Things are safest when you do not interfere.
Trying to stop a Bull Terrier is like trying to catch a greased pig. With this in mind, try to play fetch games in an open room in the home or, better yet, outdoors, where there is less possibility of broken furniture or holes in the wall.
Bull Terriers love to play and are great retrievers. If you use a ball, be sure it is large enough that it cannot be swallowed by your eager Bull Terrier.
