Caterpillar is no longer producing agricultural tractors.
The Caterpillar Tractor Company was founded in the USA when two crawler manufacturers merged in 1925. Caterpillar crawlers were early imports into Britain and gained particular popularity during and after the Second World War.
During the 1970s, agricultural ‘Special Application’ (SA) versions of the D4E, D5B and D6D were offered. The mid-range D5B was powered by a 10.5-litre turbocharged six-cylinder Caterpillar engine which produced 120 hp. It was fitted with a British-made Leverton cab and three-point linkage.
The tractors were later available as Variable Horse Power (VHP) versions, like this D5B SA VHP, which benefited from increased engine power when running in the higher four gears of the six-speed transmission. The D5B tractor was upped from 120 hp to 160 hp.
