MAUL
Maul is a not-so-fancy word for a
wooden club. It is typically shop-
made, with a large head designed
to hold up to heavy blows against
froes and splitting wedges. They
can be made from most any hard-
wood, but are considerably more
durable if made from knotted
wood, root balls, burls, or really
any wood with interlocking grain.
The weight of the head is
important. If made too small
or light it can encourage over-
gripping and vibration, but it
should not be made so heavy
that it becomes a bear to wield.
It is also a sacrificial tool that
gets eaten up in use. As the
divot becomes deeper it becomes
less effective, both because of
a loss of weight and because
the depth of the recess may
eventually exceed the height
of the froe blade.
