a shallower sweep will leave a less
dramatic texture. A steep sweep
will have a harder time following a
straight line because of its degree
of curvature, while shallower
sweeps will have an easier time.
HANDLES
Adzes can be outfitted with a
variety of handle styles and lengths
that affect how the tool can be
used. Long (12"-14") handles allow
for larger, more powerful swings
that remove material quickly, while
shorter handles allow for better
control when taking light shavings
or working close to a layout line.
The hang of an adze refers to
how the head of the tool corre-
sponds to the handle, which also
affects how the tool can be used
most efficiently. A backswept
handle like that on my Jason
Lonon adze gives me the ability
to take large swings to remove
lots of material very quickly while
sitting down at my two-legged bowl
bench. If it was replaced with a
shorter handle, it’s easy to see how
the shape and length of the new
handle would change the way the
tool performed. Handles com-
monly have wide facets down their
length to help with grip, along with
a larger section at the end to pre-
vent it from slipping mid-swing.
SMALL MAKERS ARE THE
BETTER BET
The complex shape of the adze
means that it’s an exceptionally
difficult tool to make well. The
smaller makers are the better bet
here, as production practices are
not kind to the compound angles
necessary for a quality tool. The
price tag will not be cheap for a
well-made adze, but they are en-
tirely worth it. And because there
are few makers making them well,
wait times can be considerable.
