The role of the entry level staff nurse in nursing leadership and management at the bedside is emphasized and provides a framework for understanding how the new nurse is a leader and manager and can make a difference within the health care system.

Quality and Safety in Education (QSEN) competencies have been emphasized, with chapters on each of the 6 QSEN competencies, i.e., Quality Improvement, Patient‐Centered Care, Evidence‐Based Care, Informatics, Teamwork and Collaboration, and Safety, as well as an additional chapter on Searching for the Evidence in the Literature.

Chapters on Nursing Leadership and Management in a Historical Context and Organization of Patient Care in High Reliability Health Care Organizations have been added.
