Patricia Kelly Vana earned a Diploma in Nursing from St. Margaret Hospital School of Nursing, Hammond, Indiana; a Baccalaureate in Nursing from DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois; and a Master's Degree in Nursing from Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois. Pat is Professor Emerita, Purdue University Northwest, Hammond Indiana. She has worked as a staff registered nurse, charge nurse, school nurse, nurse educator, travel nurse, industrial nurse, per diem nurse, and nurse volunteer in six states, i.e., Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Texas, and Pennsylvania. Pat loves to travel and has traveled extensively in the United States, Canada, Europe, Mexico, South America, Asia, and Puerto Rico. She has taught conferences for The Joint Commission, Resource Applications, Pediatric Concepts, and Kaplan, Inc. She has served as a Disaster Volunteer for the American Red Cross; as a volunteer nurse with a health care team of nurses, doctors, pharmacists, and lay people on a health care trip to Nicaragua; as a nursing volunteer at a free clinic in Chicago; and as a volunteer at church food pantries in Austin, Texas, and in Chicago, Illinois. Pat currently teaches national three‐day NCLEX‐RN reviews for Evolve Testing & Remediation/Health Education Systems, Inc. (HESI), Houston, Texas, and volunteers part time in the Emergency Department at Advocate Christ Medical Center, Oak Lawn, Illinois, and at Lee Memorial Hospital, Fort Meyers, Florida.

Pat was Director of Quality Improvement at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics. She has taught at Wesley‐Passavant School of Nursing in Chicago, Chicago State University, and was Associate Degree Program Coordinator at Purdue University Northwest in Hammond Indiana. She has taught Fundamentals of Nursing, Adult Nursing, Nursing Leadership and Management, Nursing Issues, Nursing Trends, Quality Improvement, and Legal Aspects of Nursing. Pat has been a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the American Nurses Association, and the Emergency Nurses Association. She has been listed in Who's Who in American Nursing, 2000 Notable American Women, and the International Who's Who of Professional and Business Women.

Pat has served on the Board of Directors of Tri City Mental Health Center, St. Anthony's Home, and the Quality Connection Journal.

Pat is the Editor with Dr. Beth Vottero and Dr. Carolyn Christie‐McAuliffe of Introduction to Quality and Safety Education for Nurses, First and Second Editions, by Kelly, Vottero and Christie‐McAuliffe, Springer Publications (2018 and 2014). She is also the Editor with Dr. Beth Vottero and Dr. Geralyn Altmiller, of Quality and Safety Education for Nurses, Third Edition, Springer Publications (2021) Pat is the Editor of Nursing Leadership & Management, First, Second, and Third Editions, Delmar Cengage Learning Publications (2012, 2008, and 2003), which has been adapted for use in Canada, i.e., Nursing Leadership and Management by Patricia Kelly and Heather Crawford, First and Second Editions (2013 and 2008) Nelson Publications; and Nursing Leadership and Management, by Patricia Kelly and Heather Quesnelle, Third Edition (2016). The text is also used in India.

Pat is the Editor of Essentials of Nursing Leadership & Management, First Edition, by Kelly‐Heidenthal, 2003, Elsevier Publications. She is also the Editor with Professor Tazbir of Essentials of Nursing Leadership & Management with Janice Tazbir, Fourth Edition, 2021, by Kelly and Tazbir, Wiley Publications (2021). She co‐edited Nursing Delegation, Priority Setting, and Making Patient Care Assignments, with Maureen Marthaler, First and Second Editions, Delmar Cengage Learning Publications (2011 and 2005). In this Fourth Edition of Nursing Leadership and Management, Pat is the chapter co‐author with Dr. Ruth Hansten of “Nursing Delegation,” and the chapter co‐author with Janice Tazbir of “NCLEX‐RN Preparation.” Pat also contributed many chapters on various topics to most of the above textbooks.

Pat also contributed a chapter on “Obstructive Lung Disease: to Daniels, R. Medical Surgical Nursing, Delmar Cengage Learning (2010), and a chapter on “Preparing the Undergraduate Student and Faculty to Use Quality Improvement” in Practice to Improving Quality, Second Edition, by Meisenheimer. She has written several articles, including “Chest X‐Ray Interpretation” and many articles on quality improvement. Throughout most of her career, she has taught nursing at the university level. Pat has traveled extensively in the United States, Canada, China, Europe, and Mexico, and has been licensed and worked part‐time throughout her career in Emergency Departments or other patient care units in Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Texas, Oklahoma, and Philadelphia. JANICE TAZBIR

Janice Tazbir earned an Associate Degree in Science in Nursing at Purdue University Calumet beginning her career as an RN at the age of 19. She furthered her education, earning a Bachelor's Degree and then a Master's Degree as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Critical Care. Her clinical nursing background is in critical care nursing and she has worked the entirety of her career, currently in critical care at the University of Chicago Medicine in the Level 1 Trauma ICU. Her husband, Johnny, and daughter, Jade, are RNs as well, working at the University of Chicago Medicine. Jade is a newly graduated RN and is the primary chapter author for Chapter 29 in this text. Another daughter, Joule, is a 2020 graduate of the University of Alabama (with a 4.0 GPA) in Accounting. Janice has maintained a clinical practice as staff nurse her entire nursing career. Her teaching career has been at Purdue University Northwest, Hammond, Indiana from 1997 to 2019, where she has taught advanced medical surgical nursing, pathophysiology, critical care, capstone in nursing, care of the older adult, physical assessment, and NCLEX‐RN preparation. Janice attained the status of Professor of Nursing in 2011 at Purdue University Northwest. She was awarded the Teaching Excellence Award at Purdue University Northwest in 2006. She has been a Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) since 2012. Janice is a member of many professional organizations including Sigma Theta Tau, the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, and the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses. She has published numerous refereed articles and book chapters over her career. She has presented locally and nationally, authored/edited four previous books including: Clinical Companion to Accompany Contemporary Medical Surgical Nursing. Tazbir, J. Janice publishes on current topics in critical care* (see selected publications).

She teaches NCLEX reviews for Evolve Testing & Remediation/Health Education Systems, Inc. (HESI), Houston, Texas as a Live Review Instructor and has been a Peer Advisor and Consultant, is an expert on NCLEX and HESI exams, including test writing, test analysis, teaching faculty regarding NCLEX, and presenting on NCLEX* (see selected presentation). She currently is a Consultant for Anderson Continuing Education in Sacramento, California as well as a staff nurse at University of Chicago Medicine.

Janice's administrative and committee involvement includes serving as past Undergraduate Program Coordinator at Purdue University Northwest, Hammond Campus. In her over 20 years of progressive teaching and administrative contributions to the PNW, she has made many key contributions that include (but are not limited to): appointed to Faculty Senate for multiple terms, Chairperson for multiple committees, including Faculty Affairs and Curriculum and Educational Policy and the Ad Hoc Promotion and Tenure Committee. She represented faculty in key University strategic initiatives such as mentoring, evaluations, promotion and tenure, strategic planning, experiential learning, first year experience, and unification. She was a key leader for Purdue University Northwest College of Nursing initiatives including NCLEX success and preparation, mentoring faculty and students, HESI coordination, testing center collaboration, testing, strategic planning and Purdue University Northwest College of Nursing unification efforts, where Purdue University Calumet and Purdue Westville combined universities as well as colleges of nursing.

Her passions include her family, traveling, and yoga. She has traveled the world from Egypt to Iceland and continues to travel and grow. She is a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) and practices yoga on and off the mat. Contact her at jtazbir1@gmail.com
