Creating a Straight Edge

Оглавление

Regardless of how well the fabric was originally cut, you will have to straighten the edge before cutting pieces for your quilt to produce accurate strips across the fabric.

1 | Place your fabric on the cutting mat with the fold toward you, the selvage away from you, and all the surplus fabric to the side in the direction of the hand you cut with. Make sure that the selvages are exactly aligned.

2 | Lay a set square on the fold of the fabric and line your ruler up against the square with a horizontal line on the ruler in line with the bottom of the square.

3 | Place your hand at the bottom of the ruler, remove the set square, and, starting in front of the fold in the fabric, cut until your cutter is level with the top of your hand. Then, maintaining the pressure on the cutter, creep your hand farther up the ruler, cut again, and repeat the process until you have finished cutting off the waste strip.
