Ancient Wooden Carving

Discovered in Wales

An ancient wooden carving was

discovered in Wales in September

2012, it was recently revealed.

Workers building a wind farm in

the Rhondda Valley in southern

Wales found the 6,000-year-old

carving on a hillside. The carving,

which dates to the Late Mesolithic/

Early Neolithic period, is unusually

well preserved because it had

been buried in a waterlogged peat

deposit. It is more than five feet

long and might have marked a

tribal boundary, a hunting ground,

or a sacred site, reported the BBC.

The piece is currently undergoing

conservation treatment and will

eventually be displayed at the

National History Museum in

Cardiff, Wales.

Russian Orphans

Learning to Carve

Children at a special-needs orphanage in Vokhma,

Russia, are using donated copies of

Woodcarving

Illustrated

to learn to carve, a skill that some of them

may pursue as a career when they graduate from the

orphanage at age 16 or 17. According to Patricia Heinle

of Beaver, Penn., a group of volunteers from western

Pennsylvania visits the orphanage, located 500 miles

northeast of Moscow, annually. Led by Dr. Suzanne

Vogel-Scibilia, the group supplements the Russian

government’s support of the children. During their visit

last summer, the volunteers found the children using

donated copies of

Woodcarving Illustrated

to learn

carving. Their teacher, Tatiana Ivanovna Tyulyandina,

“couldn’t stop praising the magazine!” said Pat. “She

said that the pictures in the magazines have been great

teaching tools. They don’t speak or read English so the

pictures were essential.”

The volunteer group will visit the orphanage again

next year and would welcome additional donations

Florida Winter National

Wood Art Show

The Florida Winter National

Wood Art Expo and Competition

is celebrating its 25th year in 2014.

The show, which is scheduled for

January 11 and 12, has been moved

from Fort Meyers to the Charlotte

Harbor Event and Conference in

Punta Gorda, in part because the

new facility has ample free parking.

Show organizers have added

categories to their competition,

including two for carvers under

age 17, and have scheduled both

demonstrations during the show

and classes before and after.

According to the show’s vice

president, Bill Tournay, “Whether

it’s to enter into competition, stock

up on those hard-to-find supplies,

or take in the beautiful pieces of

art, there will be something for

everyone.”
