Regulation of Barrier Function, Epidermal Lipids, Differentiation, and Desquamation

Оглавление

pH and buffers regulate SC barrier and are involved with the activation of various enzymes of the ceramide metabolism, including β-glucocerebrosidase and acid sphingomyelinase, which require a low pH to operate optimally [27]. A reduced acid sphingomyelinase activity parallels the increased pH and reduced buffer capacity in aged skin (Jensen et al. [28], 2005). pH and buffer capacity also influence epidermal differentiation and desquamation by regulating the activity of the serine protease SC chymotryptic enzyme (kallikrein 7) [29].
