Previous Radiotherapy

Оглавление

Early in the 20th century, many benign aliments such as tinea capitis, enlarged tonsils and adenoids, thymus, breast disease as well as cervical tuberculosis were treated by external beam irradiation. A series of patients so treated for cervical tuberculosis is reported to have developed hypopharyngeal carcinoma some median latency period of 54.4 years later [77]. Radiotherapy has also been used to treat patients with early squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx [78], as well as for the treatment of early stage non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma [79] and have been associated with the late development of hypopharyngeal cancer. There remains the need for clinicians to be aware of employing radical radiotherapy for the treatment of UADT cancer in the “young” as there is a low but real risk of inducing cancer in the survivors.
