Hypopharyngeal cancer is uncommonly diagnosed in the developed world, but is increasing in incidence in the developing world, mainly in Asia. Men are more commonly affected, but evidence shows that the incidence in women is also slowly increasing. Tobacco is the major aetiological factor, enhanced by the ingestion of alcohol. Other factors such as diet, radiotherapy, particular employment and possibly viruses are uncommon. Prevention is by abstaining from tobacco and areca nut, and by drinking alcohol in moderation.
