The Role of a Patient Registry
ОглавлениеIn clinical trials, patients who satisfy certain entry criteria are enrolled and receive treatment using well-defined protocol guidelines. While prospective randomized clinical trials are considered class 1 evidence, these can be performed for only select indications. QI registries are used to document use of a specific technology for a broad spectrum of indications and patients. A QI registry stores information of all patients treated using a technology or procedure. Analytics of a database can evaluate the effectiveness of management practices in the real world. The knowledge gained from analysis of this data can be quickly implemented and results in timely improvements in patient care. The data obtained from QI registries represent actual care as the treatments are not based on protocols and patient follow-up schedules are conducted in a real-life setting [7]. Kondziolka et al. [8] recently developed a prospective data collection system (registry) that allows data collection and analysis across all elements of a stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) practice.
