Abstract: The analysis of speech acts as presented by John R. Searle is criticised for its ignorance towards the speaker-hearer-relation and its consequences for the investigation of speech behaviour in conversation. The fact that illocutionary effects often are the result of bargaining or co-construction between S and H has to be investigated within a complete theory of linguistic communication. A proposal is made as to how such an analysis can be elaborated without foregoing such notions as illocutionary effect and speaker-intention. This is undertaken by means of the notions of we-intentions and collective actions, which are applied to conversational encounters.
