5.5.3 Adjectives as Nouns

Оглавление

Adjectives may be used as nouns more freely than in Modern English, with or without an article, in both the singular and the plural. This usage is particularly characteristic of alliterative verse. So wise and snepe, ‘wise and foolish people’, 2/225; þe schene, ‘the bright sun’, 8/440; busy, ‘busy activity’, 8/157; ronk, ‘determination’, 8/298; the seke, ‘the sick man’, 16/104.
