How to define and describe simple objects [8]

What are you carrying with you in your pockets? Find something interesting and describe it. Now choose one of the following objects and describe it: A harness, a frame, a blade, a pot, a torch, a spare tyre (US: tire), a hammer, a compass, an instrument panel, a book.

Define it: It is a tool/a thing/an instrument/a device/ a piece of equipment/ a gadget/ a machine.

For example: A harness1 is a piece of equipment, consisting of straps, e. g as worn by a parachutist, by which a horse is fastened to a cart.

Describe its composition: it consists of....., it’s made up of....., it’s composed of... . For example: A book is made up of a front cover, a back (rear) cover and x amount of pages.

Say what it’s made of: is it made of plastic/metal? For example: The blade2 of a knife is made of metal. A pot is made of earthenware/metal.

Describe its shape and dimensions: ....a rectangular box; ....a conical hole. For example: A pot is a round vessel.

Describe the location of the parts: Some words: ....is pivoted3 on...; ...is attached to/by...; ...is suspended4 from/by/in...; ... is supported5 on/by...; ...is linked to/by...; ...is housed6 on/in...; ...is connected by/to...; ...is secured7 by/to... .

For example: The spare tyre is housed in a plastic case. The magnifying glass8 is secured to the top by a screw.
