The “5-Minute Drill for Networking Success” Outline

Оглавление

We are going to do something radical here and give you the book in a nutshell, right up front, in two pages. Why? Well, we’re either stupid or stupendous. We just will not know for sure until you pass the “stup-”, so come on in and try us out.

Does This Really Work? If you must ask, you probably need the book. But ask yourself, “Are you ready to start looking for renewed joy with a new audience or a fresh conversation that will spark your interest and electrify your morning routine?

It starts now.

Prepare. Set a timer. For best results, use your mobile device’s timer for your entire drill or each section. As you find your groove, use the stopwatch and hit Lap as you begin the next step and the next, so you know how much time you spend on each. Don’t be afraid to modify the steps to suit you but hold off on that until you have completed at least ten days on the standard drill to give each step a fair shot.

1 1)Open LinkedIn and scroll down your home page, full of updates and activity from personal connections and companies you follow. (2 minutes)a)Like and Comment on 5 - 20, depending on the size of your network and the length of your “Drill.” Remember it is important for you to be seen as an intelligent human that cares about the people and the business. Don’t leave throw-away comments, rather take a couple more seconds to invest in something a bit more intellectual and competent.b)Be sure to take note of any immediately beneficial content or connections you come across. Write them down and bookmark the page.c)But do NOT stop your drill! It is essential that you use your drill time on the drill—it’s only Five Minutes! And you might miss an even bigger deal if you quit the race too early.

2 2)Visit 3-5 groups each day and find 3-5 active discussions on which you can make intelligent comments. (2 minutes)a)People who post comments to those discussions will be heard and make the original posters feel heard. Onlookers in the group will take notice of you as well, increasing your visibility from others “in the room”, making you the topic of conversation.b)Once you get a feel for what engages that audience, post engaging content! Don’t be afraid to ask for opinions!

3 3)Look for and connect with at least two to five individuals every day. No executive must think long to come up with realistic options representative of at least two of the following categories. Be sure to send them a note if possible, either with the invite, via email, or even text. If you send the invite after you meet, let them know it’s coming; if before, give them a taste of what to expect. (1 minute)a)Colleagues and peers.b)Mentors and those whose work you admire.c)Professionals you might meet at a conference and engage.

That’s it. Notice how your network grows, your views increase, your phone rings more, and, particularly as you refine the topics of your conversations, you become a recognized thought leader in your industry and for your area of expertise!
