Exercising Your Brain
ОглавлениеYour mind is a computer that can be programmed. You can choose whether the software installed is productive or unproductive. Your inner dialogue is the software that programs your attitude, which determines how you present yourself to the world around you. You have control over the programming. Whatever you put into it is reflected in what comes out.
Many of us have behavior patterns today that were programmed into our brains at a very early age. The information that was recorded by our brains could have been completely inaccurate or cruel. The sad reality of life is that we will continue to hear negative information, but we don’t have to program it into our brains.
The loudest and most influential voice you hear is your own inner voice, your self-critic. It can work for or against you, depending on the messages you allow. It can be optimistic or pessimistic. It can wear you down or cheer you on. You control the sender and the receiver, but only if you consciously take responsibility for and control over your inner conversation.
Habitual bad attitudes are often the product of past experiences and events. Common causes include low self-esteem, stress, fear, resentment, anger and an inability to handle change. It takes serious work to examine the roots of a harmful attitude, but the rewards of removing ourselves of this heavy load can last a lifetime.
The brain acts a lot like muscles in the body, and just like muscles, it needs its exercise. The more you work out your brain, the better it functions.
Brain fitness is quite a huge concern, and is as important as overall body fitness. Therefore, when concerned with keeping the body fit, you should consider the brain as well. It’s important for working your mental muscles.
Exercising the brain keeps it sharp and alert. Brain fitness should be a priority for both the young and old alike. There are a number of reasons why such fitness is essential for any person. The primary reason why you need to exercise your brain is cognitive diseases. Keeping the brain fit can help keep such diseases at bay, or even better, manage them.
Exercising the brain also helps in improving memory. Most people consider an accident or illness as the only prerequisites for working out their brain. This should not be the case and it’s essential that you continue training your brain every day – just like you need to exercise and eat well every day so as to keep fit. You do not have to wait until you develop diabetes to start eating well and exercising. The same applies to brain fitness and it’s one way to help you keep healthy.
Now that you know the importance of exercising your brain, you may be wondering how best you can exercise your brain. Here are a few things you can do to improve the functioning of your brain and strengthen it.
1.Practicing Simple Math Every Day
Perhaps you remember the Mad Math Minute from grade school, where you'd need to solve as many math problems as possible in a minute. While it may have seemed annoying then, it was excellent practice that you can still make use of now. It's easy enough to create your own Mad Math Minute worksheets, since you're basically just writing out a bunch of simple math problems on a piece of paper.
The bottom line is this: a minute of simple math can help get your brain in shape and make you far less reliant on a calculator.
2.Writing Instead of Typing More Often
We love our keyboards. They’re much more efficient at getting words on the page than your hand, a pencil, and a notebook. However, you can learn more effectively by writing longhand. Therefore, you may want to ditch the laptop when you’re acquiring new knowledge.
This happens because your brain’s filtering system (the Reticular Activating System, or RAS) processes what you’re actively focusing on at the moment. Writing triggers the RAS and let’s your brain know it’s time to pay attention.
3.Act Like You’re Teaching
You can utilize the skills you already have more effectively by acting like you’re teaching. Rather than just recalling the steps required to complete the task at hand, pretend as though you’re teaching yourself how to do it. This will help you recall the necessary information better and avoid making stupid mistakes.
4.Telling Yourself Stories
Storytelling can be a good way to exercise your brain. First of all, it makes things easier to remember as it puts what you want to remember in a more compelling framework. It gives you a chance to focus on important details and associate emotion with what you’re trying to remember.
Even if you’re not telling yourself a story to help retain the information, you’ll still improve your memory just by telling stories in general.
5.Playing Sudoku
You’re probably familiar with Sudoku, but just in case, it’s a number puzzle game with the objective of filling up a grid of numbers. Sudoku is a fun and addictive game that can help improve your problem-solving skills.
6.Meditating
Nothing kills your ability to use your brain effectively, as well as your brain’s overall health, like too much stress. Meditation is a great way to reduce your stress level. Also, you don’t need incense or yoga pants to meditate the brain.
Practicing these exercises regularly will help you ensure that your brain remains sharp, healthy so that it may perform at its optimum.
