Giving Students the "Inside Scoop" on Learning Targets
ОглавлениеTo truly invite students into the realm of assessment—and learning targets specifically—we may want to consider giving them security clearance into the "Office of High Command." I've found that sharing educational theory and terminology with students is a good thing, so long as it's appropriate for the grade level. For example, a number of years ago, I decided to share with my students in grades 9 to 12 the definitions, application, and theory behind the terms formative and summative when describing assessment. I wanted my students to use these as working terms in their own learning, and an indicator of success was when a grade 9 student asked about our upcoming quiz, "Is it going to be formative, kinda like a check-in for how I'm doing?" These types of responses suggested that students were beginning to understand that the purpose of formative assessment is different from that of summative assessment.
