Engaging Secondary Students with Learning Targets

Kari Straube, a grade 11 and 12 English teacher, attended one of my professional development sessions and was inspired to involve her students in the sharing and construction of learning targets. Shortly after the session, she sent me her version of a student-centered unit plan for the study of Beowulf (Figure 2.7). Straube underscores the notion that there is more than one way to structure a unit plan. Key features of her design include

 Essential or "Big Idea" questions.

 Student self-reporting of an academic goal.

 Student voice and opportunity to create their own "Epic Hero" project.
