Ezekiel, without saying a single word, dramatizes the Word of the LORD to exiled Judah. He takes a tablet made of clay; places it before him and engraved upon it the city Jerusalem. Even the method of dramatization was a sign unto the people, as engraving was done on a surface that had already hardened; therefore, the inscription had to be chiseled as a demonstration of Israel’s rebellion against GOD. Israel designed a pathway for themselves, which lead them away from the covering and protection of Abba Father. A memorial of Israel’s descent from righteousness was necessary to show them that the predicament they now found themselves was by their own doing and only national repentance, which was a sign of contrition, would move the hand of GOD in their behalf. The next seventy years would be one of anarchy, religious antagonism and deep distress.

Verses 4-8

Lie thou also upon thy left side, and lay the iniquity of the house of Israel upon it: according to the number of the days that thou shalt lie upon it thou shalt bear their iniquity. For I have laid upon thee the years of their iniquity, according to the number of the days, three hundred and ninety days: so shalt thou bear the iniquity of the house of Israel. And when thou hast accomplished them, lie again on thy right side, and thou shalt bear the iniquity of the house of Judah forty days: I have appointed thee each day for a year. Therefore thou shalt set thy face toward the siege of Jerusalem, and thine arms shall be uncovered, and thou shalt prophesy against it. And, behold, I will lay bands upon thee, and thou shalt not turn thee from one side to another, till thou hast ended the days of thy siege.

One might consider these orders as being crude and rather strange, but the LORD viewed them as mercy and grace.
