“Coastal Carolina University is a public, comprehensive, liberal arts institution. The university offers baccalaureate programs to approximately 8,867 undergraduate students in 55 fields of study including acclaimed programs in marine science, resort tourism and professional golf management. Graduate programs include an M.B.A. Waties Island, 1,062 acres of pristine barrier island on the Atlantic coast, provides a natural laboratory for extensive study in the sciences. Students enjoy a nationally competitive NCAA I athletic program that includes football, an inspiring cultural calendar and a tradition of community interaction fueled by more than 100 student clubs and organizations.”

Campus Setting

Coastal Carolina University, founded in 1954, is a public, comprehensive university. Its 630-acre campus is located in Conway, nine miles from Myrtle Beach. A four-year institution, Coastal Carolina University has a total enrollment of 9,478 students. The campus features a marine science and wetland biology lab. Coastal Carolina University provides on-campus housing with 1,029 units that can accommodate 3,290 students. Student Life and Activities

Over half (61 percent) of students live off campus. As reported by a school representative, “‘Cliques’ are prominent, social and cultural life is up and coming. OSAL, Residence Life and Multicultural Student Services are working to enhance cultural diversity and awareness. Popular gathering spots include the CINO Grille, Student Center game room, volleyball court in front of the Woods community, campus recreation center, Broadway at the Beach, Coastal Ale House and the beach. Popular campus events include football games/tailgating, late night bingo in the commons, Casino Night in the fall, CINO Day in the spring, Homecoming week events, Greek week events, Greek formals, step shows, diversity programs, intramural sports, basketball games, baseball games and game show nights. Coastal Carolina University has 185 official student organizations. Popular groups on campus include Greeks, athletes, STAR members, Leadership Challenge members, Coastal Productions Board, honor societies, the Chanticleer, CCU Customs, gospel choir and intramural teams. Academics and Learning Environment

Coastal Carolina University has 406 full-time and 265 part-time faculty members, offering a student-to-faculty ratio of 17:1. The most common course size is 20 to 29 students. Coastal Carolina University offers 46 majors with the most popular being management, marketing and communication and least popular being intelligence/national security studies, physics and economics (B.A.). The school has a general core requirement. Cooperative education is available. All first-year students must maintain a 2.0 GPA or higher to avoid academic probation, and a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 is required to graduate. B Student Support and Success

At Coastal Carolina, professional academic advising and peer mentoring are available. The school also has a course called UNIV 110, which is designed to develop critical thinking and research skills, to provide community support during the first semester of enrollment and to acquaint students with the school's resources. Tutoring sessions are offered and there is even a Grammar Hotline to call. The UNIV 110 course, also known as a “First Year Experience,” involves peers, faculty and staff and other members within the community. Students play an active part in forums, workshops, discussions, readings, case studies and community service projects. This includes assignments that might come in various forms, ranging from quizzes, tests and journals to presentations, portfolios and writing projects. In the end, UNIV 110 helps students to develop a clearer and more comprehensive academic and career development plan for the future.

Support for Students with Learning Disabilities

Students with learning disabilities may choose to take a lightened course load. High school foreign language waivers are accepted. According to the school, all students who register are requested to participate in a coaching relationship with the counselor where an academic plan is developed and followed and there are meetings with the student throughout the first semester. Meetings include time management, organization, specific areas of weakness (i.e. reading, math, writing), tutoring and study group. How to Get Admitted

A high school diploma is required, although a GED is also accepted for admissions consideration. SAT or ACT test scores are required of all applicants. SAT Subject Test scores are considered, if submitted, but are not required. According to the admissions office: Sliding scale with minimum combined SAT Reasoning score of 960 (composite ACT score of 21) and minimum 3.0 GPA required. Academic units recommended: 4 English, 4 Math, 3 Science, 2 Social Studies, 2 Foreign Language.
