“Coe College's mission is to provide students an education of superior quality that prepares graduates for satisfying lives in a global society. Coe believes that a liberal arts education allows students to discover their real talents and interests, while developing the skills, abilities and habits of mind that will make possible a successful career in any field of endeavor, including ones that do not yet exist. The Coe Plan, an innovative and unique program grounded in the liberal arts, is designed to ensure that Coe students make an effective transition from college to career. Coe is one of the few private liberal arts institutions in the country to make practical, real-world experience, such as internships, off-campus study and research projects, a requirement for graduation. Nursing students reap the benefits of one-on-one clinical experiences at a top 100 hospital located across the street from campus, students majoring in the sciences complete high-level research projects with faculty and students from all majors work in the largest undergraduate, student-run writing center in the country, located on Coe's campus.”

Campus Setting

Coe, founded in 1851, is a church-affiliated, liberal arts college. Its 60-acre campus is located a mile from downtown Cedar Rapids. A four-year private institution, Coe College has an enrollment of 1,420 students. Although not originally a co-educational college, Coe College has been co-ed since 1853. In addition to a large, well-stocked library, the campus facilities include: music studio · GIS/GPS lab. Coe College provides on-campus housing with 20 units that can accommodate 1,186 students. Student Life and Activities

Eighty-six percent of students live on campus. Hot spots on and off campus include the Pub, the Piano Lounge, Library Quad, TKE House, Mahoney's, Moose McDuffies and Brewed Awakenings. Blindspot, athletic events, plays, Presidential Ball and Homecoming are the most popular social events of the year. Coe College has 81 official student organizations. Students groups who influence campus life include Greeks, Cosmos, athletes and the Senate. For those interested in sports, there are intramural teams such as: basketball · flag football · floor hockey · racquetball · soccer · softball · squash · tennis · Ultimate Frisbee · volleyball. Coe College is a member of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (Division III).

Academics and Learning Environment

Coe College has 93 full-time and 74 part-time faculty members, offering a student-to-faculty ratio of 11:1. The most common course size is 10 to 19 students. Coe College offers 51 majors. The most popular majors are business administration, psychology and nursing. The least popular are German, French and philosophy. The school has a general core requirement. Cooperative education is available. All first-year students must maintain a 2.0 GPA or higher to avoid academic probation. B Student Support and Success

Like a growing number of colleges today, Coe offers a First Year Seminar to help students transition from high school to college. This program emphasizes learning basic writing skills and offers a number of different classes to take to get these skills. To support this, the college has a Writing Center plus a Speaking Center for stronger oral presentations. The college also provides an Academic Achievement Program that offers an umbrella of services. Academic assistance includes tutoring, advising, helping with study skills, getting supplemental instruction, reading assistance and math help. Several types of counseling are offered, including peer, personal, career and substance abuse. In addition, Coe offers the TRANSITIONS program, a half-credit course that helps students “improve skills necessary for successful performance in college,” including the topics of study skills, time management, self motivation and personal responsibility.

Coe College provides a variety of support programs including guidance in academic, career, personal, psychological, family planning, minority students and religion. Remedial and refresher courses are available in: reading · writing · math · study skills. Annually, 79 percent of freshmen students return for their sophomore year. Approximately 20 percent of students pursue a graduate degree right after graduation. One year after graduation, the school reports that 25 percent of graduates have entered graduate school. Among students who enter the workforce, approximately 63 percent enter a field related to their major within six months of graduation. How to Get Admitted

For admissions decisions, non-academic factors considered: interview · extracurricular activities · special talents, interests and abilities · character/personal qualities · volunteer work · work experience · state of residency · alumni relationship. A high school diploma is required, although a GED is also accepted for admissions consideration. SAT or ACT test scores are required of all applicants. According to the admissions office: Minimum composite ACT score of 20 (combined SAT Reasoning score of 940), rank in top two-fifths of secondary school class and minimum 3.0 GPA recommended. Academic units recommended: 4 English, 3 Math, 3 Science, 3 Social Studies, 2 Foreign Language.
