What’s the Deal?
You’ve just learned something
amazing: Your nose has a secret
superpower. It “tastes” more flavor than
your tongue does. In fact, its smell receptors
can detect more than 1 trillion smells
(compared to the only five different kinds of
tastes your taste buds can recognize). Your
partner probably couldn’t accurately
guess the juice flavor with her eyes
or tongue alone, but her nose
knew the real score!
Send your partner out of the room. Stick
a piece of masking tape on the bottom of each
glass and number them 1 to 4, making sure she
won’t be able to see the numbers. Pour one type
of juice into each glass.
Drip a different food coloring into each
glass and stir so your partner won’t recognize
the juice by color alone. Record the number,
juice type, and color in each glass on paper.
Call your partner back. Tell her to hold
her nose, sip from each glass, and guess the
juice type. If she’s like most people, she’ll be
kind of confused—her eyes and tongue will give
her two conflicting flavor messages.
Ask her to let go of her nose, close her
eyes, and sniff the juice before drinking it. Her
guesses should be on target now. All hail the
mighty schnoz!
