On every plate is a science lesson—a story about where food comes from, how we prepare it, and what
it does once we’ve swallowed it down the hatch! At the Exploratorium, we observe and investigate the
full spectrum of science every day, from physics to chemistry, biology to human behavior. Some of our
most popular investigations are kitchen experiments using ingredients we eat all the time.
To best learn about the science of cooking and food, we’ve selected some of our favorite activities that
Exploratorium teachers, scientists, and artists have developed over the years, plus a few more great
ideas from other kitchen tinkerers. Here’s how they work:
