CAMPFIRES
ОглавлениеSometimes, nothing is as comforting in the backcountry as sitting around a campfire. Unfortunately, often nothing is as devastating—especially in popular areas where downed wood gets picked clean and vegetation trampled.
If you plan on making a fire, first make sure that it’s allowed. Fires are prohibited in many popular lake basins and high-altitude areas. In general, fires are not permitted in the Mount Rainier National Park backcountry or above 3500 feet in Olympic National Park.
Also be sure to stay abreast of fire bans, as areas that usually allow campfires often prohibit them during extended dry periods. If you plan on having a fire, stick to established fire rings and keep your fire small. Always take a camp stove, and plan on using it to cook, as wood may not be available and conditions (such as a storm) may render a campfire unfeasible.
