My first backpacking trip in Washington, in the autumn of 1989, shortly after I relocated to the state, was a solo adventure to Olympic National Park’s High Divide. Over those two magical days deep in the Olympic Mountains, I watched a black bear sow and her cub splash in a tarn, elk bugle in a subalpine basin, and a curious young coyote sniff out my campsite. And I sat under a blood-red evening sky by an alpine lake listening to an Olympic marmot pierce the stillness of the air with his highpitched whistles. Vivid memories of this trip are forever etched in my mind.

Since that summer, I have logged more than 30,000 miles of hiking on Washington’s trails. And since my High Divide sojourn, I have backpacked scores of equally stunning and magical places throughout the Evergreen State. This book captures 80 of them. I’ve assembled trips ranging from 14 to 50 miles, perfect for weekend and weeklong adventures. I’m excited to share these great backpacking trips with you!
