Mostly they tell the story of my ignorance and earnest
intent to wrest a spoon from a chunk of apple wood.
So many years and spoons later, I couldn’t make those
spoons if I tried; it was a moment in time. I treasure
them. This isn’t to say that there is something better
about work that looks crude, that it’s somehow more
honest. This is again where I turn to Danielle’s work
to teach me. Her bowl might have deep gouge cuts
all over the surface, but the expertly rendered forms
reveal a deep understanding and prowess. Her choices,
both subtle and bold, challenge our expectations of the
object and the person who made it.
This kind of work is worthy of study.
Woodworking has a history hangover; there’s just too
damn much of it. It can be crushing to the practitioner
that so much of the past surrounds us, taunting and
tempting us to believe that the ditch has been dug.
I encourage you to step out of time, become the cave
dweller, make sense of this material, these tools, this
object. It’s just you in the flickering light, discovering
for yourself what is possible and beautiful.
Danielle will show you how.
