Before you blithely give a dog as a gift, consider whether the receiver is able or willing to offer the commitment, environment and stability needed by a dog.

If you have previously owned a dog and experienced the unique bond that can develop between you, then you will know that ownership involves an ongoing responsibility and long-term commitment, consideration for others and a responsible attitude towards society. You will also already know that, properly treated, a dog can prove a loyal and affectionate friend and give its owner many years of love and devotion.

When choosing a new dog, don’t let your heart rule your head. Be aware of the size (height, length and weight) to which a puppy may grow, the amount of food it will eat, the grooming and exercise it will need, the temperament it might have, the possible health problems that might arise and its possible life span.

Before deciding to get a dog as a pet, whether it is for the first time or as a replacement, ask yourself the following important questions:
