Integrating a new dog with one you already own

Оглавление

You may already own a dog, perhaps one that is getting on in years, and wish to bring another one into the household. Whether this will cause problems or not will depend on a number of factors, including the ages of the dogs and how you go about integrating them.

The two dogs will need to establish their own hierarchy within the household – which one is dominant and which subordinate. They may do this with little or no incident – a young puppy, for example, will usually defer to an older, naturally more dominant dog. There may be problems, though, if the new dog is an adolescent and decides to become the dominant dog, and your other dog objects. (For more details, see pp71–2, Aggression between dogs in the same household.)
