Pure-bred or mongrel?

Оглавление

There are thousands of mongrel dogs (sometimes also called cross-breeds) in dog shelters and pet shops, waiting for a loving home. Many of them will make ideal companions, and the ‘hybrid vigour’ that comes from their mixed (often unknown) parentage may ensure that they have a healthy constitution and are less likely to suffer from any inherited or breed-specific defects.

The main disadvantage in selecting one is that you don’t know what breeds are in its parentage. You may be able to get some idea from its shape and size, but you will have far less information about its likely temperament than if you select a pure-bred animal.

If you do decide to opt for such a dog, try to insist on a trial period of at least one month.
